In just about every city throughout the country, breweries and distilleries are popping up with increased frequency. There are many reasons; one is because they cater to a wide audience. You’ll find breweries that have family friendly areas, some with private meeting rooms, and others with stages for live music. As you and your distillery or brewery architect work together, talk about how your design will cater to clients both today and into the future.
Bottling for On-Site Sales and Distribution
Although you may not currently have plans for bottling or in quantities for distribution, what type of space would you need if that became something you wanted to do? Another thing to think about and discuss with your brewery architect is whether or not to include a loading dock or at the very least a door through which you can fit a pallet. Also look at your storage space. Would you have somewhere to store bottled items for resale in your facility or before you ship them out?
Growth
There are many additional and different building codes required for a brewery or distillery that aren’t necessary in some other commercial spaces. Your brewery architect will discuss various local codes that must be adhered to because of your industry. With those additional codes, moving can be costly. Do you have room for growth on the site you’re considering? If not, should you consider a different location or a second story that can be finished later? Don’t just plan for opening day, but look ahead five and ten years.
Customer Experiences
Each brewery and distillery has a different plan for the customer experience. Perhaps today you want to be a 21 and up space where customers can see the brewing or distilling process. Can you grow that experience into a tour in the future if you want to offer that? What about when the 21 – 30 group becomes parents? Do you have a plan where they can include kids in a non-bar setting? An experienced brewery architect can discuss these and similar questions during the design phase to make sure you’re forward thinking with your plans.
